French conjugation in present perfect indicative

The present perfect indicative or passé composéin french, is a compound tense, which means it has two parts:
    • the auxiliary verb in present indicative (either avoir or être)
    • the past participle of the main verb

    Grammatical agreement

Like all French compound conjugations, the present perfect indicative may be subject to grammatical agreement:
    • When the auxiliary verb is être, the past participle must agree with the subject, except for reflexive verbs (same rules as conjugation with auxiliary avoir) and invariable past participles.
    • When the auxiliary verb is avoir, the past participle must agree with its direct object when the direct object is placed before the verb.
